For the last 80 years the musical life of Poznan has been closely
connected with the Academy of Music, one of eighteen similar establishments
of higher education in Poland. There are many famous institutions
of culture in Poznan such as the Grand Theatre, the Poznan Philharmonic,
the Polish Dance Theatre, the Musical Theatre. Poznan hosts the
famous Henryk Wieniawski International Violin and Violin Makers
Competitions.
There are four departments in the Academy: The Department
of Composition, Conducting, Music Theory and Calisthenics; The Instrumental
Department; The Department of Singing and Acting; and The Department
of Choral Conducting, Musical Education and Church Music. The rich
collection of the Academy’s library contains more than 70,000 volumes
and 10,000 recordings.
The Academy Rector is the cellist Stanislaw Pokorski.
