HENRYK WIENIAWSKI
Henryk Venyavsky (1835—1880) was a leading Polish
violinist, conductor and composer. Born in Lublin, he began his
studies at the music school at 6 years of age, and in two years
time was accepted into the Paris Conservatoire to study with the
famous pedagogue L. Massar. He graduated from the Conservatoire
with a gold medal
in 1846. As a Russian scholarship recipient he received a Guarneri
violin as a gift from the Tsar.
In 1859 Venyavsky was invited to Saint Petersburg
to fill the role of court soloist (1860—1872) and quickly became
the first Violin professor at the Saint Petersburg
Conservatoire (1862—1868), laying the foundation of the world acclaimed
Saint Petersburg violin. From 1872— 1874 he enjoyed a concert tour
with A. Rubinstein in America. From 1875—1877 he was a professor
