Accordion Quintet «Excelsior»

Vladimir USHAKOV, Sergei LIKHACHOV (St. Petersburg, Russia)
Svetlana STAVITSKAYA (Daugavpils, Latvia)
Gennady SAVKOV, Eduardas GABNIS (Vilnius, Lithuania)

The idea for this accordion quintet’s creation was born in the autumn of 1999, during the International Bayan and Accordion Music Festival in Che lya binsk, Russia. It was at that time when the two accordion duos — Vladi mir Ushakov with Sergej Likhachov and Eduardas Gabnis with Gennady Savkov — became acquainted. The musicians played some compositions together — within two participating ensembles — at one of the festival concerts. When the group felt the need for another player, the door opened
for Svetlana Stavitskaya, the accordionist from Latvia, to become a member of the ensemble.

Eduardas GABNIS

In 1976 Eduardas Gabnis graduated from the Lithuanian Music Academy. From 1983-1986 he was educated in P. Tchaikovsky Ukrainian National Music Academy. At present E. Gabnis is a rector of the Lithuanian Music Academy. Since 1978 E. Gabnis has been playing in a duo with the accordionist Gennady Savkov. Their ensemble has been laureate of several international contests, appeared in many countries of the world, and given more than 800 concerts.

Gennady SAVKOV

Gennady Savkov graduated from the Lithuanian Music Academy. He continued his education in Kiev, in the P. Tchaikovsky Ukrainian National Music Academy. G. Savkov often performs with well-known Lithuanian vocalists, chamber and symphonic orchestras, and with the variety group «Retro». Vladimir USHAKOV

Vladimir Ushakov graduated from the State Academy of Culture (1994). Since 1984 he has played in a duo with Sergei Likhachov. In 1989 the duo permanently added its rhythm-section. The new collective became known as the St. Petersburg Musette Ensemble. In 1999 the ensemble won first prize in the international accordion competition in Castelfidardo, Italy. V. Ushakov is producing the «St. Petersburg Musette Ensemble Editions», a publication of music material for the accordion.

Sergei LIKHACHOV

Sergei Likhachov graduated from the State Academy of Culture (1994). Since 1984 he has played in a duo with Vladimir Ushakov. Since 1989 he has been a soloist laureate in international competitions with the St. Petersburg Musette Ensemble. S. Likhachov is also conductor of the accordion orchestra in the V. Andreev Children’s Music School.
